Leather DIY at KRAKEN

The 4th floor of Reel mall in Shanghai features craft studios and workshops. For leather DIY, try KRAKEN. The leather goods store sells their own designs and offers leather-making classes. They have courses daily. You can select from 3-4 products but only make 1 item per class. I purchased 2 courses, RMB260 each. But you can also opt to buy a package of courses for a discounted price.

Project 1: Leather-Wrapped Keychain

This course only required taking a long strip of precut leather material and wrap it around the hardware. Simple but at the same time a bit tricky. The key is to keep firm and even tension while wrapping. I found this hard to do unless I wrap a few centimeters down, unravel and rewrap to keep the leather strip tight. Time to complete: 1 hour.

Tracing of the paper patterns using a metal tool with rounded tip. After scoring a line, we use a knife to cut the pattern out. Best to cut within the scored line, otherwise your leather will be bigger than the paper pattern.

Using the same tool, mark the holes. Then use a fork-like tool and rubber hammer to punch out the holes, 4 at a time (not shown here).
