Learning Ceramic Glazes
I find so many nice examples of colors and effects on other people's ceramic wares. But I have no idea how to achieve the same effect. Here are some things I tried in my introductory wheel throwing course. Maybe it will help other beginners.
One of the things I love and appreciate from Clay by the Bay studio is they have a decent variety of underglazes and glazes that can be used at no additional fee if you take a class. While they do have color samples on each available glaze, I made color chips to see the final effect against the clay I was using. And it is nice to have my own reference sample for the future.
Most of the tableware I made was kept simple, just matte white pebble on speckled buff clay. But I really love the small cup I made combining purple underglaze.
Next time I take a class I will do a new color study using different application methods to see what the effects will be. The color samples below were all made by dipping.
